2023 Summer Internship Program
Research Assistant

Introduction

The Institute for Public Architecture (IPA) seeks a Research Assistant (RA) to assist with the 2023 Summer Residency Program taking place on Governors Island in New York Harbor. The IPA’s internship program offers the opportunity to gain familiarity with the fields of architecture, urbansim and policy research, while developing hands-on experience in a dynamic non-profit design organization.

The RA will work closely with the Residency Manager to plan and facilitate programming, coordinate logistics for events, panels and exhibitions and help with the daily operations of the Block House, a landmarked building on the Island that the IPA occupies. Together with the Fellow cohort, the RA will engage with a variety of professionals and organizations related to architecture, urbanism, and policy.

The RA will also have the opportunity to work directly with an international cohort of Fellows on their projects. This might include assisting Fellows with research documentation, developing diagrams or other visual representations to support their project, visiting sites of interest around New York City, or planning the presentation of the projects for several exhibition events.

We welcome applicants from the fields of design, architecture, urban planning, policy, and those committed to the public realm in all disciplines. Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.

Compensation

The internship begins on May 30th, 2023 and will last until early/mid August, although the specific end date is flexible. The RA is expected to commit 10-20 hours a week, including occasional weekends. The specific schedule will be established between the Residency Manager and RA. An hourly stipend of $17.00 will be provided. As the internship is in-person, applicants should be located in the New York City area for the Summer. RAs will also receive free ferry access to Governors Island.

To Apply

To apply, please send a resume and a cover letter detailing your experience and interest to info@the-ipa.org by March 30, 2023. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and those received first will be prioritized.

About the Residency

Fellows are invited to engage with the many other educational and institutional tenants that occupy the various buildings on Governors Island.

About the IPA

The IPA uses design to challenge social and physical inequities in the city. We address urgent issues of design and policy by mobilizing our network of activists, professionals, government officials and community stakeholders. The IPA's collaborative process involves a focused design residency and related programs.
